Would You Like to Enhance Your CAREER Prospects in a Financial
Organisation?
LEARN: Financial Modelling; Spreadsheet Programming;
Investment Banking Calculations;
Risk Management Systems and Financial Systems Design and
Development.
LIVE Interactive Seminars via the Internet and Conference Call
Our objective is to enhance the current and/or future career prospects of
teenagers and adults in any financial organisation. All our
seminars are based around AZMAT System
that has been designed for use by international
Investment Banks
and will be presented by the author of
the system. Various working examples from nearly 16,000 lines of
programming code in Excel 4/5 macro and VBA (Visual Basic for Applications), and
over 100 system files including 35 financial models will be used to teach:
The students’ computer screens will show what is on the teacher’s computer
screen; the teacher will be the only person speaking over the conference
call. During any live 50-minute session the students can communicate with
the teacher via the 'Question and Answer' pane on their computer screen, if the
teacher has enabled that option. It is anticipated,
however, that the students will send via e-mail any questions they have to the
teacher, at least 24 hours before the session.
The students, who could be based anywhere in the world, will need to have a reliable broadband
connection to the internet (via a PC or MAC) to attend these seminars.
They will also need to telephone a national number within UK, Europe or USA for
the conference calls. They do not need to have Excel installed on
their computers to attend any of these seminars.
In addition to the costs for attending seminar sessions, the students
will also be responsible for their own costs of conference calls. They might wish to try connecting to the
national landline number for conference call, via their computers to reduce
costs. Also, the costs of internet seminars and telephone conference
calls can be shared between two, three or even four students if they can gather
around a computer screen.

Stage 3a: Financial Systems Design and Development
Level 1: Six 50-minute sessions; Level 2: Six 50-minute sessions;
Level 3: Six 50-minute sessions.
The financial systems design and development course will build upon the stage 2
course and show how to
develop a large multi-user menu-based system that incorporates several
independent yet inter-connected modules. The students will be shown how
various systems were designed and developed into one seamless system with more
than 200 commands, over 100 system files and nearly 16,000 lines of programming code
using both Excel 4/5 macro and VBA. The course will teach the students, for
example:
a) how various programming techniques are used to offer the user a system with
200 commands and several independent yet inter-connected modules, while the user
has full access to all Excel commands.
b) how to write programming code that automatically updates various system files
in the event of as yet unknown changes in external database files.
c) how to write programming code that ensures that the system will automatically
detect and adapt itself to work under the current version of Excel from
whichever drive of the current computer system (for example, drive ‘C’, network
drive, zip drive or a ‘memory key’).
d) how to convert and test the programming code to ensure that the main program
file can be used under different versions of Excel, without user’s involvement.
This course is much more advanced than the spreadsheet programming course.
It
is designed for those who have completed Stage 2 and either have at least one
practical project in mind or have already started the design and development of
one simple application program to do a specific job, involving several
spreadsheets.
The objective of this course is to give the students sufficient in-depth working
knowledge of financial models and sophisticated programming techniques that were
developed by the author over a period of 17 years. Thus by the end of
stage 3a (18 sessions of 50-minute duration) most students should be well on
their way to design and develop sophisticated menu-based spreadsheet systems of
their own as required in their jobs by their current or future employers.
After completing Stage 2, those who wish to proceed further can choose to attend
Level 1 seminars for -
Stage 3b: Investment Banking Calculations
Level 1: Six 50-minute sessions; Level 2: Six 50-minute sessions;
Level 3: Six 50-minute sessions.
The investment banking calculations course will build upon the stage 2
course and introduce students to
different methods and calculation formulae of various financial instruments as
used by investment banks around the world in their day-to-day business. It will
use the 12 calculation models and rates environment models for present value,
yield and discount factor calculations.
Some of the investment banking and risk management business terms covered in
AZMAT System are as follows: cash flows; discount factors; yield; present value;
internal rate of return; accrued interest; average life; equivalent life; yield
to maturity; redemption yield; duration; modified duration; convexity; simple
margin; discounted margin; bonds (with call, put, sinking funds, partly-paid,
graduated rate); zero coupon bonds; perpetual; asset swaps; floating rate notes;
convertible bonds; bond warrants; equity warrants; money market instruments such
as treasury bills, fixed rate certificates of deposit and floating rate
certificates of deposit; volatilities; correlations; cash flow maps; and
principal maps.
It should be stressed, however, that the course will cover the business terms
as shown above only to the extent as they are used in various calculation models
of the system. However, the teacher will show the actual calculation formulae of
all the instruments used in all the financial models that have been checked for
accuracy with working examples.
The objective of this course is to give the students sufficient in-depth working
knowledge of various formulae and how financial calculations are carried out.
For example, it takes only 2 or 3 seconds after the user selects a command to
calculate present value, 11 types of redemption yield for a bond, internal rate
of return or discount factors if all the required parameters are valid.
However, how several financial models and program sub-routines are used behind
the scenes to carry out various checks and calculations before the results are
presented to the user, in seconds. This course will attempt to cover
step-by-step to show what calculations are needed in order to arrive at the
required results.
Similarly, where the results are calculated automatically in certain financial
models as soon as any input value is changed by the user, this course will show
the actual formulae that are used in both foreground and background
calculations. Thus the students can appreciate what they would need to do
when they are designing and developing financial models to carry out various
tasks. For example, which calculations to perform in the foreground, which
in the background, which via program sub-routines and which dynamically.
Those who wish to take this course should ideally first take the stage 3a,
financial systems design and development course, if they are interested in that
course as well. However, they can take this course immediately after
stage 2 if they are not interested the stage 3a course. This is
a specialist course and will only be offered if there is sufficient demand.
However, those who learn the subject matter should gain detailed knowledge of
the calculation formulae and of various financial instruments that are used by
the investment banks. This specialist working knowledge should help the students
enhance their career prospects in an investment bank.
After completing Stage 2, those who wish to proceed further can choose to attend
Level 1 seminars for -
Stage 3c: Risk Management Systems
Level 1: Six 50-minute sessions; Level 2: Six 50-minute sessions;
Level 3: Six 50-minute sessions.
The risk management systems course will build upon the stage 2 course and
introduce students to
different methods of calculating risk for various financial instruments as used
by investment banks around the world in their day-to-day business. It will teach
students how different types of risk reports for senior management are produced
using financial models for cash flow and principal maps to calculate various
categories of risk. It will use a dozen risk management financial models in
conjunction with various volatility and correlation files for different time
periods. It will also show how to extract correlation between any two
instruments from a 3.5MB file containing 120,000 correlations, in seconds,
without actually opening the file in memory.
Those who wish to take this course should ideally first take the stage 3a,
financial systems design and development course, if they are interested in that
course as well. However, they can take this course immediately after
stage 2 if they are not interested the stage 3a course. This is
a specialist course and will only be offered if there is sufficient demand.
However, those who learn the subject matter will gain quite detailed knowledge
of how investment banks use risk reports to calculate and minimise their
exposure that could amount to millions of dollars on a daily basis. This
very specialist working knowledge might help the students enhance their career
prospects in an investment bank.
Should I attend any of these Seminars (Stage 1, 2, 3a, 3b, 3c) ?

Stage 1: Introduction to
AZMAT System and Programming
All students need to attend Three 50-minute sessions,
before proceeding to stage 2 (see above).
Those who are interested in enhancing their career prospects and/or want to buy
Azmat*, might want to enrol on this course for £58.75** (including VAT) and
attend three 50-minute sessions of seminars via the internet and conference
call. This short course will use AZMAT System, a risk management and
front-office dealing room system, to introduce students to various financial
models and macro programming. This enterprise-wide, password protected Excel
spreadsheet system took eight man-years to develop and contains over 100 systems
files, a 200-page online help manual and nearly 16,000 lines of Excel
programming code.
As AZMAT System is the basis of all our courses, the students need to get
familiar with various aspects of the system in order to understand and
appreciate what is involved in the design and development of any financial
system. The objective is to give those who are new to programming and financial
systems an idea of what could be achieved using spreadsheets and programming,
and also whether this kind of work appeals to them. By the end of the
three sessions they should have a fair idea about AZMAT System and also whether
to proceed to stage 2 (see above), to attend our other courses to learn: Financial Modelling; Spreadsheet
Programming; Investment Banking Calculations; Risk Management Systems and
Financial Systems Design and Development.
Those who are already familiar with spreadsheets and programming but not to a
great extent, should find introduction to this enterprise-wide,
password-protected and multi-user system an interesting example of what can be achieved,
in perhaps a year or two, by those completing stage 3a (see above). Those who have extensively used spreadsheets and
have more than five years' programming experience should treat this as a long
introduction to AZMAT System (which is used extensively in all our courses),
rather than a short course to learn about spreadsheets and programming.
This introductory course should also help them decide whether to proceed to
stage 2 (see above) and beyond.
To attend seminars via the internet and conference call, any Windows
or Mac computer connected to the internet can be used and it does not need to
have Excel installed. The students will also need to call a national number
within UK, Europe or USA while attending the seminars.
To install and use AZMAT System on their own computers, the buyers will need
to have any version of Excel from version 12 (Microsoft Office 2007) back to
version 5, under the Windows operating system, already installed on their
computers. After receiving payment for Azmat* when it is released for sale, we will send
a copy of AZMAT System CD to the postal address that the buyer gave on the
registration form, as soon as practicable. We will keep the buyers informed of
the progress via this site.
How the students will learn using AZMAT System
Just to clarify, AZMAT System has not been designed as a training tool but it
can be used as one to improve the productivity and business performance. As the
students, situated anywhere in the world, progress through their courses they
will be encouraged to prepare work-related financial models. They will learn:
The students who have at least a few months' experience of using spreadsheets
would really benefit from our courses. They do not need to know any programming.
They also do not need to know any investment banking formulae or calculations.
However, the learning time will be much shorter for those who have some
knowledge of programming (in any language) or who have used spreadsheets for a
year or who know investment banking calculations. The spreadsheet programming
techniques (some very special) and various financial models in AZMAT System
which took eight man-years to design and develop, should considerably increase
the students’ knowledge and understanding of financial systems development.
For those students who are new to spreadsheets and programming but who have a
keen interest and desire to learn to improve their career prospects, separate
seminars will be held if there is sufficient demand. They should appreciate that
it will take them longer to learn, as the subject matter is new to them.
However, with AZMAT System installed on their own computers with hundreds of
working examples to learn from, the 200-page on-line Help manual and with
regular seminars by the author via the internet and conference call, they
should gain considerable knowledge of spreadsheet models, programming and
financial systems.
